American Girl Choreography with Karen Barbee
Live + Replay access until October 2026
Â
OK, let me be honest.
Part of me is doing this choreography simply because I love Tom Petty.
And part of me is doing it because I’ve spent YEARS hearing some version of “you’re too American in this art form,” which honestly just makes me want to explore that tension even more.
So here we are.
This choreography is built around “American Girl,” giant guitar riffs, layered shimmies, lyrical phrasing, group camaraderie, and the odd beautiful reality that a bunch of people on one side of the world somehow fell deeply in love with a dance form from another.
Also yes:
You may absolutely end up dancing in jeans or leggings.
Movement-wise, we’ll be alternating between dancing the musical tempo and dancing the syllables of the lyrics — because at this point in my life I genuinely cannot help myself.
And if you know this song at all, then you already know:
there HAVE to be shimmies.
