Unlock your full potential
WITH KAREN BARBEE'S IMMERSIVE PROJECT BAND COURSE!
With “The Lessons of Live Music”, you can experience the transformative
power of live music at your own pace and discover invaluable insights
through exercises curated over decades of dedicated development by an
established professional dancer

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
In this online course, you will discover the invaluable skills that come from working
towards a performance to live music, with experienced musicians, and within an
iterative process of execution and review.

• How to confidently improvise to ANY music by:
o Learning how to hear a piece of music in several different ways.
o Learning more about your personal dance style on a range of spectrums.
o Understanding how to expand your range in an organic, music-based manner that is more likely to stick than just learning more new steps!
• What your “go to” moves are, why you have them, and how to adjust them if you want.
• Tools for building and/or speeding up your “accessing mechanism” for the vast dance vocabulary that you likely already have.
• How to frame and store new dance movements as you learn them so that they are more readily available to you for future choreographies or improvisation.
• How to listen to music to get the maximum options for interpretation out of yourself.
• Adaptability to unanticipated occurrences in performance.

WHO IS THIS FOR?
- Dancers who want to be prepared to improvise
- To recorded music (safest).
- To live music (getting daring here…).
- To live, improvised music (now we’re talking!)
- Dancers who want to better understand the similarities and differences in choreographed versus improvised performance.

- Dancers who have an upcoming opportunity to perform to live music and who want to be better prepared.
- Plateaued or bored dancers who are looking for a new challenge.
- Veteran dancers who are looking for some fun, energy-packed inspiration that reminds them of the “good old days of live music” and provides a reason to keep dancing.
- Dance teachers who are looking for some new, innovative ideas for class.
- Dancers who have been aware of or heard of Karavan’s Project Band live music curriculum – but haven’t been sure about how to participate or get started.
- Dancers who are interested in attending GoLive! but are a bit concerned about their preparedness with regards to live music.

MORE ABOUT KAREN
Karen Barbee began studying Belly Dance at the age of 10. Decades later and after years of professional performance, Karen has developed a teaching methodology for this dance form based on technical precision, soulful innovation, and cultural respect.
Having begun her study of Belly Dance during the 1970’s, a period of limited explanations, she developed her own. With degrees in Accounting and Computer Science, Karen’s analytical tendencies, training and skills have assisted her in developing methods and curricula that are extremely popular in the western world.
While teaching classes with varied content and at all levels, Karen is best known for her creative Drills classes that challenge a dancer’s body and brain in ways that both explicitly and implicitly expand movement vocabulary. She is also known for her continued work to integrate dance and live music.
Karen founded Karavan Studio in 1988 and has operated the studio in San Antonio, Texas ever since
